O'Loughlin Gaels quest to bag their first AIB All-Ireland Club SHC title ended in tatters as Clarinbridge staged a powerful second half display at Croke Park yesterday.

The All Ireland club hurling title has come west of the Shannon to Galway on 10 occasions since 1971. Tomorrow (St Patrick’s Day) Clarenbridge are aiming to make that 11.

The hurling gods smiled on Clarinbridge on Saturday in Thurles when Eanna Murphy scored a late late goal in a tremendous game to qualify for the All-Ireland final in three weeks’ time.

A club’s season can turn on a small thing. Clarinbridge were close to crashing out of the Galway county championship in the group stages last summer. It took a late free from Mark Kerins to snatch a draw off Beagh in their last group game, and without that score, they would not have even qualified, having lost their first two games to Kinvara and Portumna.

What a difference a year makes. The Galway jersey has always carried a deep and meaningful importance for Tony Og Regan and not being involved at inter county level in 2009 brought pain. There was a drop of defiance in Regan’s revival, though, and the lonely period of reflection was utilised to maximum effect.

A local man will raise funds for six of his favourite charities when he participates in the North Pole Marathon next year.

The mood in Clarinbridge all week has been one of deep satisfaction and delight at having collected the club’s second county hurling title in Kenny Park with a narrow victory over Loughrea after extra time.
